Why
Why Japan? Why a rural town? Why Kamikatsu?

Mottainai, the sense that nothing should be wasted, has shaped daily life here for centuries.

In the countryside, that culture is not a slogan. It is how people cook, build, farm and repair.

A mountain town of about 1,300 people in Shikoku, and the first in Japan to declare zero waste, in 2003.
In numbers
From Kamikatsu to Tokyo
Kamikatsu’s approach to resource circulation is also informing initiatives in Tokyo. In Marunouchi, Mitsubishi Estate, SPEC and Kamikatsu Town are collaborating through reRise TOKYO to put circular economy ideas into practice.
This section introduces related initiatives in Tokyo. It does not describe an itinerary or a visit included in the Kamikatsu experiences.
